The problem is a Florida law

The only law for plastic bags we have in Florida is a law that prohibits any regulation on plastic bags! But many Florida cities want to stop the free hand out of plastic bags.

Right now over one hundred cities in the US, as well as many different countries in Africa, Asia and Europe have fees for or have outlawed plastic bags. Cities in Florida who would like to do the same but are not permitted under the current law.

The easiest way to convince people to bring their own bags would be a simple charge of 30 cents per plastic bag. However, no city in Florida is allowed to do this since the law was set in place from the Senate Committee for Environment in 2004.  The Florida Committee on Environment should be at the forefront with uniform plastic bag regulations for Florida. But they use this law as an excuse to drag any decision endlessly away. An easy and impactive solution would be for stores to charge a fee for each plastic bag a customer uses. The problem would be solved.

However, this law should not stop us from considering the impact of plastic bags on our environment. We do not need our government or any supermarket to change this. We all can limit the litter on our streets by simply bringing our own bags.
